How to Tell a True War Story Essay

September 8, 2011

“In the end, of course, a true war story is never about war. It’s about the special way that dawn spreads out on a river when you know you must cross the river and march into the mountains and do things you are afraid to do. It’s about love and memory. It’s about sorrow. It’s about sisters who never write back and people who never listen.”

Tim O’Brien “How to Tell a True War Story”

Using text from the story and examples from O’Brien’s “How to Tell a True War Story,” construct an essay in which you will argue one of the following points:

1.    “The Little Regiment” is a true war story.

2.    “The Things they Carried” is a true war story.

3.    “The Little Regiment” is a not a true war story.

4.    “The Things they Carried” is a not a true war story.
