Paraphrase

HOMEWORK (Due Wednesday 11/2)

  1. Do your vocab stuff for List 7.  Print your list with definitions and sentences and put it in your vocab section…I’ll check it one of these days and all seven of your lists should be there in order to get full credit!
  2. Write a paraphrase for  “Desert Places” (pg 157) OR “White Lies” (page 25).  Be sure to do a careful line-by-line reading.  Include the most vital points and details, and state the poem’s main thought or theme without quoting any original passage.  Use the checklist on page 18 to help you and the example on page 17 of the poem “Ask Me” by William Stafford.  Your paraphrase should be between 1/2 and  one page long (typed).

HOMEWORK

  1. Read “The Red Wheelbarrow” by William Carlos Williams on page 32 and type your answers the questions that follow.
  2. Try your hand at writing a poem like “The Red Wheelbarrow.” You can try starting with “so much depends upon…” and see what happens.
  3. Read about irony in poetry (pgs 33 – 34).
  4. Read “Rite of Passage” (pg 35) and do the questions after it.
  5. Choose 2 poems from pages 36 – 41 and figure out why they appear in this section.  What is ironic in each poem?  Use specific examples from the poems to prove your point(s).

HOMEWORK

  1. Study for vocab
  2. See “Writing Assignment on Tone” on page 44 in your book.  Choose one of the poems/topics listed.  If you have another idea, let’s talk about it before the end of the day tomorrow.  To do a good job, you should read “Thinking about Tone” and use the Checklist on page 43, as well as look at the example on page 44.  Your essay should be about two pages typed.  It’s due Monday!
