Assignments for 9/6 – 9/7

September 6, 2012

Thursday 9/6

Intro to the new course, expectations, housekeeping

What is American Literature? What is the American voice What is a canon?

Ragged Dick and Wes Moore

Homework:

1-2 page (no more, no less) typed response paper that serves three purposes.

First, it will introduce (or reintroduce) yourself to me–you can tell me a quick story, give me some background about you, share your goals…whatever.

Second, I want you to write about the third book you read this summer.  Here are some questions to get you started–You don’t have to answer them all!  Did you like it? Hate it? Why? Should we add it to our curriculum? What did you take away from your reading of it? Why did you pick it?

Third, this will give me a sense of your writing.  I want you to write it yourself and proofread and edit it yourself before turning it in.

Remember to bring your anthology and your grammar book to class tomorrow!

Friday 9/7

The Puritan Experiment, Puritan Historiography, American Exceptionalism

Jonathan Edwards and John Winthrop

Homework (due Monday 9/10)

Read “A Modell of Christian Charity” by John Winthrop (p 141-153).  Use the handout I gave you in class to help you.

Go through the first part of  Chapter 1 (pgs 3-20) in your grammar book.  Complete all the exercises and fill in the study guide I gave you. Bring in any questions or items you’d like to review on Monday.

Bring in your binder.
